The NASA-funded Sungrazer Project, operated by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, has discovered its 5,000th comet using data from the joint NASA and European Space Agency's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The discovery was made using the NRL's Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) telescope aboard SOHO. LASCO has detected 5,000 previously unknown comets passing close to the Sun, providing valuable information about their composition and physical properties. The mission, which has been ongoing for nearly three decades, is coming to an end.
