The discovery was made using the NRL's Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) telescope aboard SOHO. LASCO has detected 5,000 previously unknown comets passing close to the Sun, providing valuable information about their composition and physical properties. The mission, which has been ongoing for nearly three decades, is coming to an end.
