Cybersecurity researchers from ESET discovered a new threat actor group called Virtual Invader, which created malicious Android apps posing as communication products and came with the open-source XploitSPY malware. The campaign, named eXotic Visit, targeted individuals in Pakistan and India and offered rudimentary communication services while extracting sensitive information such as contact lists, device locations, and messaging app data. The attackers added new features throughout the year and distributed the apps via standalone websites and Google Play Store. The chances of being infected were relatively low due to specific targeting.
