The U.S. Army has begun equipping soldiers with its Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) systems, including the XM7 rifle and XM250 automatic rifle, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The NGSW program was initiated due to a Congressional assessment in 2017 to upgrade Army weapons, ultimately deciding on the adoption of the 6.8mm family of ammunition and fire control systems for each weapon. With an initial delivery of around 10,000 rifles, skepticism remains from some soldiers who are accustomed to the M4 carbine. The NGSW weapons will see fielding by special operations, infantry, and other close combat forces in the coming months, but operational testing does not guarantee widespread use in the future.
