Nassau County Republicans in New York are pushing for an armed civilian militia, despite opposition and comparisons to historical militias with questionable histories. The proposed "special deputies," who would undergo background checks and mental health evaluations, could act as a backup police force in emergencies. While Blakeman maintains the militia isn't intended for political protests, he hasn't ruled it out in extreme situations. The push comes amid growing conservative support for civilian-led militias, which scholars warn could lead to violence.
