Microsoft pitched the US Department of Defense (DoD) on using Azure's version of OpenAI's image generator, DALL-E, for battlefield applications. This was revealed in a presentation obtained by The Intercept, which indicated Microsoft wanted to use DALL-E models to create images for training battle management systems. However, Microsoft noted the advantage of Azure over OpenAI as it wasn't bound by OpenAIs mission to ensure AI benefits all humanity and does not prohibit military usage. OpenAI previously restricted its tools from military and warfare applications but removed this policy in early 2023, and started working with the Pentagon.
