A security vulnerability in Python packages was discovered, affecting Debian and Ubuntu Linux distributions. The issue, called the "Python Package Dependency Hijacking Vulnerability," allows attackers to inject malicious code into packages, potentially leading to system compromise. Red Hat warned of a new backdoor, XZ malware, also targeting Linux systems. Nonya suggested implementing defense in depth, including using a solid network firewall, limiting package repositories, setting appropriate security permissions, and using tools like AppArmor or SELinux.
