A rare display of smoky vortex rings was observed over Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. The massive volcano, which is both the tallest and most active in Europe, produced several dozens of these rings from its southeastern crater on April 2, 2024. Vortex rings are formed when condensed gases from deep underground make their way to the surface. Boris Behnck, a volcanologist at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, reported that the small vent located on the volcano's northeastern edge caused this phenomenon, which has earned Mount Etna the nickname "Lady of the Rings." These eruptions do not indicate an imminent eruption; however, they may cause temporary disruptions to air traffic and other transportation systems.
