Archaeologists in the Czech Republic unearthed a 10,000-year-old ice skate made of animal bone. The object, discovered during a rescue dig in a house basement, is believed to have been used for both personal transportation on ice and as an attachment to transport sledges. The ice skate doesn't have enough active biological material for direct dating but was found alongside 10th or 11th-century pottery fragments. This discovery holds historical significance as it dates back to the time of a powerful fortress occupied by Polish King Boleslav the Brave. The shuffling method of ice travel suggests the skate's usage was more practical rather than high-speed maneuvers. Other similarly aged ice skates have been found in Europe, particularly Scandinavia, and researchers continue to study this one for further insight into its origin and use.
